“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good” - Romans 8:28
Do you believe that everything happens for a reason? The Apostle Paul certainly did.
To be a Christian is to accept the Good News that Christ’s sacrifice has freed us from the slavery of sin.
Accepting this Good News means that you already know how the story ends. Good overcomes bad. Life overcomes death. Truth overcomes illusion. And God overcomes all.
Notice how Paul includes a condition in this verse: “For those who love God.”
Those who love God make seeking Him their number one priority in life. With our limited knowledge, we can never know exactly what this seeking will entail. But we can know one thing: Along this road periodic suffering is inevitable.
But as Paul told us in Romans 5:3, we are to rejoice in our suffering, as it will ultimately serve to bring us closer to God. It is only through the overcoming of suffering that God can convince us to trust Him with our whole being.
If we love ourselves above all, we cannot ever be sure that all things are working together for us. But if we love God above all, and seek Him at all times, we can rest assured knowing that every single event in our life is working to reveal the eternal living God to us. What more could we ever want than this?
Eternal God, who are the light of the minds that know you, the joy of the hearts that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you; grant us so to know you that we may truly love you, and so to love you that we may fully serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom, in Jesus Christ our Lord. - St Augustine
