Be Doers of the Word (James 1:22)

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. - James 1:22

This verse can also be read as, ‘Be doers of the logos…

The namesake of this website, Logos is a word that lost much of its meaning after being translated out of the Greek language.

Its meaning can be understood as an amalgamation of word, discourse, reason, meaning, and logic. In John’s gospel, we are told the Logos was made flesh in the personhood of Jesus Christ

In the context of this verse, think of the Logos as a treasure map. By itself, the map is simply ink on paper. It has no vitality of its own. It can be read, studied, and analyzed by professionals and experts, but only the one who acts upon the map will discover its treasure.

The Logos of Christ, is truly a map leading to treasure. But the treasure cannot be found by pure analysis. As Jesus Himself proclaims in Matthew Chapter 7:

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock… And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.“

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord - Proverbs 16:20
