I Desire Mercy, Not Sacrifice (Matt 9:13)

Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ - Matt 9:13

O God of love,

Your image has been tainted by so many throughout the ages.

Some picture You a vengeful bloodthirsty God out to get us.

Others picture You a mere passive observer of our earthly affairs.

Others still imagine that Your standard is not perfection.

The truth is simply this:

That you are not only the God of love,

You are love itself.

God is love and love is God.

All that you desire is to be in perfect union with us.

It is not You that is the problem, but us.

We continually reject You.

You do not desire our sacrifice.

You have no need of anything.

No.

You call us to sacrifice for our own benefit,

because You know what is best for us.

Your know us better than we know ourselves.

Sacrifice reminds us who You are.

Sacrifice removes what is holding us back from You.

Sacrifice takes burdens off our shoulders.

Sacrifice opens our eyes to Your sovereignty.

Lord, help us remember to be still and know that You are God.

Help us to make proper sacrifices, worthy of a King.

Help us to become empty vessels so that we may be filled with Your Holy Spirit.

God is love,

and whoever abides in love abides in God,

and God abides in him.

1 John 4:16
