Knowing God (John 17:3)

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent - John 17:3

As a child I used to wonder what Heaven would be like.

Over the past year or so of walking with Jesus, I have gotten a glimpse of the answer.

Jesus said that eternal life is "knowing God."

Eternal life is not a place, it is a state of being. God exists outside of time and space, and when we are united to Him, we will be where He is. Those of us who know Jesus and walk with Him daily have undoubtedly experienced slivers of heaven. But, in this fallen world, we have also undoubtedly experienced slivers of hell.

This is because until Jesus returns, our knowledge of Him will remain partial.

Paul says, "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." - 1 Cor 13:12

Knowledge of God does not come from studying books or getting degrees (though these can certainly be helpful). Knowledge of God comes from seeking Him above all else every day.

The knowledge Jesus is referring to is not scientific knowledge, it is relational knowledge. We don't gan knowledge of God by studying Him like He is an amoeba under a microscope. We gain knowledge of Him by getting to know Him.

Someone who wants to know God will naturally want to study their Bible - it won't feel like a chore but a privilege. Someone who wants to know God will naturally want to spread the Gospel - not because he feels obligated to but because it is simply his identity.

It is through walking with God daily that the Holy Spirit reveals the knowledge of God to each of us. And it is through the application of this knowledge that our minds are renewed, and we begin to live as if a slice of heaven is here already.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. - Psalm 34:4

John 14:23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. This is why it's so important to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
