“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” - Luke 2:14
These are the words of the angels to the shepherds upon the announcement of Jesus's birth.
Christmas is a celebration of the incarnation - when God took on flesh.
There are countless reasons why God became man on that Christmas morning 2000 years ago. But we can perhaps break them up into 3 main reasons:
To reveal God.
By becoming a human being, God opened the door for a true personal relationship between Him and all human beings. As important as the Bible is, God's ultimate revelation is not through a book. His revelation ultimately communicated through any moral teaching. His revelation occurs through a Person, the Person of Jesus Christ.
To reveal man.
Not only was the purpose of the incarnation to reveal God to man, but also to reveal man to man. Jesus is the ideal human being. He shows us what we were created to look like. Jesus is like the answer key to the question of how to be a human being.
To give us life.
Along with revealing who God is and man was meant to be, Jesus came to earth as the sacrificial lamb to give new life to mankind. His entire life was an outpouring of self-sacrificial love, beginning with His lowly birth, and culminating with His death on the Cross.
Jesus was born in the manger on the Earth 2000 years ago since there was no room at the inn. Every since then He has been looking for room in the hearts of every man, woman, and child on the face of the earth. He still to this day brings peace and joy wherever He is welcomed.
And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
Luke 1:46
