Testing (James 1:12)

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. - James 1:12

Perseverance is a virtue.

The spiritual life is not just about doing things, it is also about enduring things with patience and faith.

When we think of God "testing" us, we should think less of an exam in school, and more of a refiner's fire.

When we are tested we are purified. The dross and imperfections are burned away from us.

James makes a connection between those who endure this testing and those who love God. In other words, one of the ways we demonstrate our love for God is by persevering under trial.

We are the clay in the hands of a Master Potter.

If we let Him do His work, He will produce something beyond our wildest imaginations.

This life is for molding. The next is for enjoying the fullness of what we allowed Him to create in us.

And if we yield ourselves completely to Him now, we gain early access to that heavenly joy even while on earth.

But now, O LORD, you are our Father;

we are the clay, and you are our potter;

we are all the work of your hand.

Isaiah 64:8
